Decoding the bowling woes of Kings XI and Lions

Gujarat Lions captain Suresh Raina continued the trend in Rajkot and chose to bowl against Kings XI Punjab. The team that won the toss has opted to chase in all four games in Rajkot so far this IPL.

Lions made four changes from the side that beat Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. James Faulkner, Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni were left out for Andrew Tye, Akshdeep Nath and fast bowler Nathu Singh. Chhattisgarh spinning allrounder Shubham Agarwal was included for Ishan Kishan, who was unwell.

Raina, at the toss, confirmed that Dwayne Bravo was all but ruled out of the season with a hamstring injury. “He’s been doing proper rehab and it might take three-four weeks, so he might be out of the tournament,” Raina said. “So now we have to talk to the management and think about a replacement.”

Kings XI, who have lost four consecutive games, made three changes to the side that lost the high-scoring contest against Mumbai Indians. Manan Vohra recovered from an illness and slotted back into the opening spot. That meant Kings XI had to re-jig their top order, with Shaun Marsh being pushed to No. 3. KC Cariappa and seamer T Natarajan came in for Ishant Sharma and Swapnil Singh.

Gujarat Lions 1 Brendon McCullum, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Suresh Raina (capt), 4 Dwayne Smith, 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Akshdeep Nath, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Shubham Agarwal, 9 Andrew Tye, 10 Nathu Singh, 11 Basil Thampi

Kings XI Punjab 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Manan Vohra, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Glenn Maxwell (capt), 5 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Mohit Sharma, 9 Sandeep Sharma, 10 KC Cariappa, 11 T Natarajan
